Mr. Brian Linvill joined the Institute for Security Governance (ISG) in December 2016 as a Middle East and Africa Regional Program Lead within the Regional Advising. Mr. Linvill plans for, organizes, and leads teams of subject matter experts who conduct Institutional Capacity Building (ICB) missions supporting Security Cooperation in countries across the United States Central Command (USCENTCOM) and United States Africa Command (USAFRICOM) Areas of Responsibility.
Prior to joining ISG, Mr. Linvill spent over 25 years as a United States Army officer, in the Infantry, Military Intelligence, and Foreign Area Officer career fields, serving more than 11 years overseas. His assignments included positions as Vice Deputy J-5, USAFRICOM; Senior Defense Official/Defense Attaché to Libya; and Chief of the Eastern Mediterranean Branch in USCENTCOM’s Joint Intelligence Center.
In his role as Vice Deputy J-5, Mr. Linvill’s work focused on coordination with USAFRICOM headquarters, interagency, and multinational partners in the planning and execution of USAFRICOM’s Security Cooperation activities. Additionally, Mr. Linvill oversaw the manning of all Offices of Security Cooperation on the Continent and facilitated the Command’s interaction with its Senior Defense Officials/Defense Attaches. Upon occasion, Mr. Linvill served as acting J-5. As the Senior Defense Official/Defense Attaché to Libya, Mr. Linvill oversaw all aspects of Security Cooperation with the country, both before and after the 2011 Libyan Revolution.
Mr. Linvill holds a Master’s in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University and a Bachelor of Arts in National Security Affairs from The Ohio State University. Additionally, Mr. Linvill completed a US Army War College Fellowship at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution. Mr. Linvill lives with his wife and two children in Hillsborough, North Carolina.
