CCMR Discusses Maritime Security in US-Indonesia Seminar in Jakarta
Posted: Mar 20, 2017
E. Shipitalo
From 28 February – 02 March 2017, CAPT Tim Doorey and Dr. Peter Chalk of CCMR’s Maritime Security Program supported a joint Naval War College, Naval Postgraduate School, and Indonesian Ministry of Defense seminar in Jakarta, Indonesia entitled “Maritime Defense in the Littoral Environment.”
This seminar brought together an extremely diverse array of 50 officials, practitioners, academics, and civilians who represented the core of the Indonesian maritime security community (see the base of this article for the full list). The seminar encompassed presentations, breakout groups and panel discussions that dealt with the broad topic of how to best secure Indonesia’s archipelagic maritime environment.
This is not the first event where CCMR has worked in partnership with Indonesia. Indonesians, both civilian and military, have been active participants in our in-residence courses since 2000. In the last four years alone, CCMR has worked with nearly 1,000 Indonesians on matters related to security cooperation, engaging in dialogue that addresses both US and Indonesian interests.
Our Maritime Security Program has been increasing contact with its Indonesian counterparts. Last fall, CAPT Tim Doorey—Maritime Security Program Director—visited Jakarta to work jointly with the Indonesian Defense University (IDU) and the Indonesia Navy Command and Staff College (SESKOAL).
A follow-on seminar is scheduled for September 2017.
