PR&R Presents New "Disaster Management" Course
Posted: Oct 31, 2017
E. Shipitalo
In response to the recent cluster of disasters occurring around the globe, CCMR has added an additional in-residence course entitled Disaster Management (P170472), scheduled at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, California from June 4-8, 2018.
Hosted by the Prevention, Relief and Recovery (PR&R) program, the weeklong course provides an overview of the approaches countries use to mitigate, prepare for, and respond to disasters or emergencies of many types. It introduces contemporary topics of disaster management such as crisis logistics, urban/rural differences, inter-ministerial and inter-level coordination, and emerging technologies for disaster management. Participants will gain a solid grounding in the organizational structures, strategies, and implementation processes to apply to their own country challenges and circumstances.
“We think that this course is a great supplement to our existing disaster response curriculum,” Ashley Woodson, a PR&R team member stated. “We are excited to expand our material for , creating an active and in-depth dialogue among all participants on challenges in the field.”
Disaster Management follows Civil-Military Coordination in Disaster Relief (P170475), a successful course that PR&R has delivered annually for the past three years. Civil-Military Coordination in Disaster Relief emphasizes the knowledge and process skills that are needed for government civilian agencies, non-governmental organizations, inter-governmental organizations, and the armed forces to work more effectively alongside each other in disaster response at home and abroad. This two-week course will be held May 21- June 1, 2018 at NPS.
Disaster Management and Civil-Military Coordination in Disaster Relief add to CCMR’s rich history in delivering effective and engaging disaster response content. For instance, our Civil-Military Emergency Preparedness Program (CMEP) works closely with NATO partner countries to build national capacity for crisis management and emergency preparedness.
Additionally, PR&R partners with the Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) to deliver an annual two-day Joint Humanitarian Operations Course (JHOC)—a program that has seen robust enrollment over the years.
“CCMR is proud to add the new disaster management course to our list of successful programming,” said Woodson. “We look forward to delivering the content next June.”
Seats in the in-residence versions of “Disaster Management (P170472)” and “Civil-Military Coordination in Disaster Relief (P170475),” are still available at this time. This curriculum can be delivered as a mobile event upon request.
Please contact Ashley Woodson, aswoodso@nps.edu, for more information.
