Steven Peterson - Institute for Security Governance
Steven Peterson is the Director of the Center for Civil-Military Relations (CCMR), serving in this role since March 2018. As Director, he governs and manages the conduct of CCMR’s education, research and advisory missions. Steven leads and directs CCMR’s faculty and staff, plans and supports education, advisory and research programs to support the mission of CCMR and its core stakeholders within the US Navy, Department of Defense and Department of State, teaches associated courses, drives the design and development CCMR’s approach, methodology and curricula, evaluates course instruction, and drives scholarly research. Steven is regularly called on to provide academic advice and consultation to Navy, Defense Department and State Department personnel on civil-military relations, security and defense governance, and related topics.
Prior to becoming Director, Steven was the CCMR Defense Governance and Management Team (DGMT) Program Manager. In this role, he was lead for DGMT policy and programming development and monitoring, managing the DGMT leadership team to ensure Defense Institution Building (DIB) project and activity execution, and for providing advice and expertise to USG / DoD leadership and stakeholders on DIB and related issues.
Before joining CCMR, Steven supported the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) for Policy in the Eurasia and Partnership Strategy and Stability Operations offices. As Warsaw Initiative Fund Project Coordinator and Senior Analyst he provided day-to-day oversight of the WIF program, coordinated with and responded to OSD regional desks, US Combatant Commands, and NATO, and helped drive OSD efforts to develop its global DIB programs. Steven has also been a part of security sector reform and defense analysis teams, managed cooperative threat reduction programs, and led program guidance, budgetary, and legal authority reviews. Prior to supporting OSD Policy, Steven worked in electoral politics as a professional Congressional campaign manager and staffer.
Steven holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota, and a Master of Science in Defense and Strategic Studies from Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri.
