Faculty Practice & Capability

Mr. Lance Sells joined the Institute for Security Governance (ISG) in April of 2019 as the Peacekeeping and Exercises Lead within the Practice & Capability. Mr. Sells oversees ISG activities in support of Geographic Commands in building peacekeeping capacity within Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI) partner nations and enhances multi-national peacekeeping efforts.

Prior to joining ISG, Mr. Sells spent 23 years as a United States Army Military Police Officer and Foreign Area Officer (FAO) years and Senior Desk Officer in AFRICOM's J5 Strategy, Plans and Programs, serving 10 years overseas in total. He also served as Defense Attaché/Senior Defense Official (SDO) in Guinea, West Africa; Supervisory Security Assistance Officer at the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan; and as an Intelligence Analyst at the National Joint Operations Intelligence Center in the Pentagon.

In his role as Defense Attaché/Senior Defense Official in Guinea, Mr. Sells was instrumental in marshalling US training and material support for Guinea’s initial UN Peacekeeping Deployments to The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), a security assistance relationship that endures to this day. As a Senior Desk Officer in AFRICOM's J5 Strategy, Plans, and Programs Section, Mr. Sells managed the Security Relationship and ongoing Activities with eleven African nations, including several of the top contributing countries in Africa to UN Peacekeeping Operations. While serving at the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan, Mr. Sells served as the chief Security Assistance Office Liaison to the Afghan National Police.

Mr. Sells holds a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University, and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and European History from the US Military Academy, West Point. Mr. Sells lives with his wife and two children in Pacific Grove, California.
